As I forwarded you a couple of weeks ago, Desert Mobil got an assignment in the south of Libya practically overnight. This is why the days prior to my departure to Madrid turned a nightmare. Thanks to Robert Milič, co-author of the DM and Uroš Spruk, in charge of DM tracking, the truck drove through the customs fence at Tunis La Goulette harbour an hour after I myself landed from Madrid via Barcelona at Tunis airport. It was Saturday evening, January 23rd. At first I was planning to drive till 2, 3 am. However, in spite of the mere 4 hours I had slept the last night in Madrid, I felt well, so at 4:30 am I decided to keep on till Tripoli. The Truck reached Arkno agency at 6:30 pm after being on the road for 17 hours and a half.
The next day was equally tiresome. First the Iveco got new sleepers, actually hiking boots, afterwards it had to be loaded with everything the four 4wds hadn't taken a couple of hours earlier to their way to the 1,700 km plus long journey to Kufra where the assignment was due to start.
The day later, January 26th, the truck lost its power after refuelling a couple of times in a sandstorm. When the turbo should have engaged, a sudden loss of power occoured. The next morning we discovered at a local workshop at Ajdabiya, 160 km South of Benghazi, that only the fuel filter was clogged with sand. And the horses pulled on. :)
Through the following days a story about the 2,100 km journey through the southernmost parts of Libyan desert will be published here.
